Parents will be receiving progress reports and meeting with teachers in January and again in May. These progress reports will list the skills the students have mastered and the skills needing to be mastered before leaving school to pursue their continuing Jewish education. Teachers will update the progress reports as students move through our school. Parents can help ensure that the students are mastering their skills by reviewing homework. Click here for a website that families can use to play games that reinforce skills.
OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
2008-9/5768
The goal of Or Ami’s program of religious education is to provide a setting in which children and youth may explore the many facets of Judaism so that they will celebrate Jewish life in the present and become committed Jewish adults for the future. The synagogue seeks to offer our children and youth learning opportunities that will enrich their lives at home and at school and enable them to respond to life’s daily challenges.
We strive to accomplish these goals by recognizing that every child and youth stands at a unique point on the spectrum of learning and observance. Through personal attention to each student’s background and learning style, we endeavor to instill knowledge of Jewish beliefs and traditions, familiarity with Jewish ritual and liturgical skills, competence in Hebrew reading and basic language, and the practice of mitzvot (commandments) pertaining to tzedakah (charity), gemilut hasadim (acts of compassion), and tikun olam (social justice).
Or Ami’s program of religious education is designed to complement and further the synagogue’s overall goals as expressed in its Vision Statement:
“Kindling the Light of learning, spiritual growth, and compassion to nurture innovative Jewish life in the home, synagogue, and community.”
These goals are given additional religious definition through the synagogue’s endorsement of the Conservative Movement’s pamphlet, “Emet V’Emunah: Principles of Conservative Judaism,” a copy of which is available from the synagogue office.
