RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

A Religious Education Program:
For the 21st Century

Our Philosophy of Jewish Education

• Our notion of Jewish education is one that recognizes its inherent worth as an essential ingredient in the creation of Jewish identity and as a primary tool that leads to the practice of Judaism. Jewish education impresses upon the individual the importance of mitzvot as the primary means by which we come to forge a spiritual relationship with God and a bond with other Jews. Shabbat is central among mitzvot for it establishes holiness in the calendar, facilitates dialogue with the Divine through prayer, imparts knowledge and values through Torah study, and insures Jewish continuity through the gathering of a minyan.

• Jewish education is most effective and enduring when it is rooted in both the synagogue and home settings and when it is actively transmitted from one generation to the next. • We believe that every member of the synagogue, regardless of age or educational background, is both a student and a teacher. Pirke Avot (Ethics of the Ancestors) teaches: “Who is wise? The one who learns from every person.”
